What's Buzzing in Room 13?
Math: We have been working on number ID and counting! We count the days on the calendar every morning and incorporate counting into many of our daily activities. We have practiced writing our numbers 1-10, counting objects, counting the days we've been in school, etc.
We have also learned about 2D shapes (flat shapes) and we know how to count their sides and corners, or "vertices". We are currently learning how to sort and classify objects by similar attributes. Soon we will be learning the "tricky teen" numbers up to 20!
ELA: In phonics, we have been learning how to recognize and form our letters correctly using the Fundations program. We practice our letter formation on special lines called the sky line, plane line, grass line, and the worm line. We practice sitting like good writers and try our best to form our letters neatly! We have learned letters t, b, f, n, m, i, u, c, and o.
We are also learning about basic literacy concepts, such as following words left to right when we read, pointing to each word, answering questions about a story, and drawing pictures to represent an idea. We use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to explain our ideas. We have also been practicing labeling our pictures - labeling helps give a reader information about a picture! This is the first step to great writing!
We practice recognizing and reading sight words in a new book each week and add our new words to our word wall. These are words we will be able to use in our future writing! We practice finding them and circling them in our morning message each day, and also in our weekly take-home books. In addition, some of us also continue to practice writing our first names.
Science: We are currently using a FOSS science kit: Trees and Weather. We will check the weather every morning, and record it on the board during morning meeting! This year, we will also study trees all year long. We "adopted" a class tree in our schoolyard, and we observed it with our scientist senses! We learned the parts of a tree and how to label them. We will continue to compare and contrast different types of trees, including the shape of trees and how trees change through the seasons!
